1. As opposed to: ngược lại, trái với
Ex: This exercise develops suppleness as opposed to strength.
2. Regarding something = concerning something: về cái gì
Ex: He said nothing regarding the lost watch.
3. At the behest of somebody: theo lệnh/ đề nghị của ai
Ex: At the behest of her friends, she read the poem aloud
4. By means of: với sự hỗ trợ của cái gì
Ex: The load was lifted by means of a crane.
5. By virtue of/In virtue of = because of something: bởi vì
Ex: She got the job by virtue of her greater experience.
6. For the sake of (doing) something: vì lợi ích của cái gì
Ex: The translation sacrifices naturalness for the sake of accuracy.
7. In accordance with something : theo như
Ex: We acted in accordance with my parents’ wishes.
8. In addition (to somebody/something): thêm vào
Ex: In addition to these arrangements, extra ambulances will be on duty until midnight
9. In case of something: trong trường hợp
Ex: In case of fire, ring the alarm bell.
10. In lieu of = Instead of: thay vì
Ex: They took cash in lieu of the prize they had won.
11. In order to do something: để
Ex: In order to get a complete picture, further information is needed.
12. In place of somebody/something: thay cho
Ex: We just had soup in place of a full meal.
13. In respect of something
1. Concerning: liên quan tới
Ex: A writer was served on the firm in respect of his unpaid bill.
2. In payment for something: cho thanh toán
Ex: Money received in respect of overtime
14. In spite of = Despite: mặc dù
Ex: In spite of her love, she gave up her boyfriend
15. In view of something: xem xét về
Ex: In view of the weather, the event will now be held indoors.
16. On account of something = Because of: bởi vì
Ex: The marsh is an area of great scientific interest on account of its wildflowers.
17. On behalf of somebody: nhân danh ai
Ex: They campaigned on behalf of asylum seekers.
18. On top of
1. In addition to something: thêm vào
Ex: He gets a commission on top of his salary.
2. In control of a situation: kiểm soát tình huống
Ex: Work tends to pile up if I don’t keep on top of it.
19. Thanks to: nhờ vào
Ex: It was all a great success – thanks to a lot of hard work.
20. With a view to (doing) something: với ý định
Ex: He is painting the house with a view to selling it.
21. With regard to/In regard to: liên quan đến
Ex: The company’s position with regard to overtime is made clear in their contracts.
22. With respect to= In respect of: nói về
