Ok then, I would like to tell you about “Lì xì” which is an indispensable part in Lunar New Year. You know what, adults often wish kids of maturity and success in education by giving children a small amount of money during the first days of the new year.
I always believe that I am only 25 years old, but the fact is I turn to a 27-year-old girl right after this Tet. Well, so sad… When I was a little girl, I received lucky money from people, but for 5 recent years, I have prepared money to give back to my grandparents, parents and kids in my extended family.
For kids, lucky money is the big reason why they love Tet. After receiving lucky money, children (I was included) start counting the amount of money harvested with shining smiles on their faces. I remembered that time I gave it all to my parents and believed that my money would be saved to buy anything that I like later on such as a new teddy bear or dress. But you know what, now, I realize that I would’ve been more happy if I hadn’t given my money to them. Don’t let your parents have power over your money. It’s yours. You have all freedom to use it as you want.
Now I still like Tet, but definitely not because I still receive lucky money. You know what, as I’ve already grown up, looking back to those beautiful memories in childhood, I realize that besides the true value of money, “li xi” holds a number of different meanings to me. Now I have my own earnings from my jobs, I am able to hand out lucky money to my beloved family members and friends. I value lucky money because of the excitements that I had in my childhood and the wishes I can make to those close to me.
